Internships/Theses

Dear internship or thesis applicant,

Thank you for your interest in our work at the Center for Economics and Neuroscience (CENs) or the NeuroImaging Platform of the LIFE & BRAIN GmbH. It is possible to do a mandatory internship and/or write your bachelor/master thesis at CENs, possibly also closely collaborating with the LIFE & BRAIN. Please note that we can only accept internships that are mandatory by the study regulations of your major (the only exception are students from the University of Bonn – they are allowed to do voluntary internships, as we are part of the same institution).

There are two possible alternatives for you to work in our team:

1. Someone of our team has a project that he/she would like you to join and supervise you in or

2. We could invite you to do your own project with no direct supervisor but with the possibility to ask everyone whenever you have questions.

To apply for your internship or your thesis, please follow the application guide and its timeline below closely.

Application Guide

As early as possible:
Please write to Ms. Xenia Grote (xenia.grote(at)uni-bonn(dot)de) as early as possible that you are interested in doing your internship or thesis in our institutes and indicate the exact planned time frame (incl. start and end dates) of your stay so that she can make a note in her calendar for internship candidates and after that you can proceed with your application 3-4 months before the beginning of the internship or thesis.

3-4 months before the beginning of the internship or thesis:
Please send your application documents 3-4 months before the beginning of the internship or thesis as one PDF file (see 1a.-1c.) to Ms. Grote and name it Application_(insert your surname) consisting of:

1a. Motivational letter in English. Covering:
- what you are doing now,
- the exact planned time frame of your stay (incl. start and end dates – duration exactly according to the study regulations of your major),
- why do you want to complete your internship/thesis at the CENs,
- where your research interests lie.

1b. Your CV

1c. If applicable, please add employment reference letters, recommendations and/or certificates.

2. As a second document, please add the study regulations of your major. Please specify in the email on the paragraph indicating the regulations on the mandatory internship/the thesis or highlight it in the file itself.

After reviewing the documents at CENs:
We will review your documents and decide on whether to invite you for an interview (Skype is also possible). Thereafter, we will get in touch with you, will let you know the decision and, if your application was successful, put you in contact with the relevant colleagues for the interview.

After the interview:
After the interview, you might be accepted for an existing or an own project at our institutes.
To complete the process, please send the following additional documents to Ms. Grote:

3. Enrolment certificate of your university.

4. Only for students who are not enrolled at a German university: A document to verify that you are provided with health and accident insurance for the duration of your stay.

Final permission:
We will then review those documents (and in case of mandatory internships forward them to the administration of the University of Bonn for the internship contract). After that step, we will get back to you with your final, official permission to become part of our team.

In case you would like to change your initial plans (time frame, internship instead of thesis and the like) please make sure to consult Ms. Grote in advance to find out whether this is possible.

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact the CENs’ student helpers: censshk(at)uni-bonn(dot)de.

We are looking forward to your convincing application!

FAQ

Q: Who do I contact for what kind of questions?
A: For any question please contact the CENs’ student helpers: censshk(at)uni-bonn(dot)de.
To indicate your interest, to hand in your convincing application or to find out whether changing your initial plans is possible please contact Ms. Xenia Grote: xenia.grote(at)uni-bonn(dot)de.

Q: How long is the duration of an internship at the CENs?
A: The internship duration is exactly according to the study regulations of your major.

Q: How long is the duration of a stay to write a thesis at the CENs?
A: The duration is according to the study regulations of your major. However, collecting the data for an empirical project might take some more time. If you have the feeling that this might apply to your project of interest – please contact CENs’ student helpers as early as possible to get advice on this topic.

Q: Can I apply anyway, even if an internship is not mandatory by the study regulations of my major?
A: No, please refrain from doing so as we can only accept internships that are mandatory by the study regulations of your major (the only exception are students from the University of Bonn – they are allowed to do voluntary internships, as we are part of the same institution).

Q: An internship is not mandatory by the study regulations of my major but I am an Erasmus+ student. Does the Erasmus+ program allow me to apply anyway?
A: No, in contrast to the Erasmus+ study abroad program, Erasmus+ for internships is not based on a cooperation agreement between universities. This is why the same rules as for every applicant apply here: We can offer an internship only if it is required by the study regulations.

Q: Will the CENs cover some of my expenses or pay me a stipend?
A: We are glad to offer you the possibility to work with us. There are no costs that you would need to bear for the projects – but we unfortunately do not offer a stipend or salary either.

Q: Will the CENs provide cheaper accommodation options during my internship or thesis?
A: We are sorry that we cannot offer any accommodations. But you may find some helpful information on the University of Bonn’s website: https://www.uni-bonn.de/international/advice-contact/welcome-center/service-and-advice/accommodation

Q: Do employment reference letters have to be in English?
A: No, we do need your motivational letter and CV in English but accept employment reference letters in German.
